New parenting trend -‘no gifts allowed’ birthday parties

A new parenting trend sees parents increasingly hosting ‘no gifts allowed’ birthday parties for their kids.

Money-saving measures: In recent months, such invitations have become increasingly popular, as cash-strapped mothers look for ways to decrease costs, in any way, shape or form.

Expert: Psychologist, Dr Monique Robinson, said that it’s part of the overall trend towards minimalism – less presents means that the house is less overrun with ‘stuff’.

According to Dr Robinson, most parents ‘who choose the ‘no gifts allowed’ approach are coming from a really good place in terms of life lessons’. Read More

Nintendo: New kind of Mario’ for next E3

The next Mario game might be a little bit different.

Speaking to IGN, Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto said we could see a new type of Mario game in a couple of years.

“We’re always challenging ourselves to create something new, so hopefully you’ll see a new kind of Mario in about a year or two,” he told IGN.

He added that Nintendo will ‘maybe’ be able to share something as soon as next E3.

He further commented on the difficulty to implement massive changes to the franchise: “It’s kind of difficult with Mario because some of the more important conventions of Mario are based on the approachability and accessibility of those games.”

Miyamoto also mentioned how new staff at Nintendo allowed the platform holder to look at Mario ‘with fresh eyes’.

Nintendo showcased a new Mario game at E3, Paper Mario: Color Splash, which will hit shelves in October.

The dilemmas of planning your child’s birthday party when they get to school age

As you read this, tea and a crumpet on the go, catching up on the papers of a Sunday, spare a thought for me.

I will have been up with the lark, spreading jam onto white sliced, putting cheesy balls into bowls and trying not to drop the Captain America cake I asked someone to make (my effort last year tasted of dust and it makes me feel slightly less guilty than if I bought it at Asda).

This morning, my son is having his fifth birthday party. It involves a leisure centre, a bouncy castle, no vegetables, and a frazzled mummy who should have thought this through better and held it later in the day because it’s a really long time before she can have wine.

Kids’ birthday parties are stressful, we all know this. What I didn’t know was how much more stressful, complicated, political, even, they become once your child is of school age. Read More

Throwing a Kid’s Birthday Party Adults Will Enjoy

Arranging a child’s birthday get-together doesn’t need to mean tossing a party that speaks to the kids – and feels like another dime-a-dozen weekend for dads and moms. Without a doubt, the parents ought to be compensated and celebrated, as well, for the diligent work of child rearing!

Here are her top tips for making a memorable children’s birthday party that grown-ups too will appreciate:

  • Ditch the licensed characters. Many kids go nuts for the characters from their favorite movies or shows.
  • Choose but don’t overuse the details. A theme for a kid’s birthday party doesn’t have to mean one idea repeated in every detail.
  • Broaden the guest list. “Don’t be afraid to celebrate your kids with your kid-free friends,”
  • Serve adult-friendly fare.”What would you serve the adults if they came without their children?” Granger-Twomey encourages hosts to ask themselves. “Think past the pizza, cupcakes, and juice boxes.”
  • Hire entertainment for the kids. If the budget allows, consider an entertainer — GamesOnTruck— to occupy the kids … and allow the parents a bit of hands-free time to enjoy the fete themselves with their friends.
  • Consider an evening affair. Of course, kids have early bedtimes, and that’s why their parties are traditionally around the lunch hour.

How To Throw a Minecraft Birthday Party

Ah, the Minecraft birthday party. What every little boy or girl is wanting this year, mine included. When presented with the idea of a Minecraft birthday party I was a little overwhelmed, truth be told, since I don’t pay attention to the games that Mr K plays, that job falls upon his Dad. Being the brilliant tech-minded guy that he is, Mike vetoes every game or website that the kids play and when I looked at Minecraft I was a little unimpressed, to say the least. I don’t really “get it. Read More
